THREE MAJOR FILMS TO ILLUSTRATE THESE DECADES

Rebel Without a Cause 1955

It is about the growing genration gap that emerged in1950s America. James Dean plays the part of Jim Stark, a rebellious teenager whose malaise leads to conflicts with his peers and parents.
The concept of the " teenager" was born in the 1950s and Dean, dressed in his hallmark denims and white tee-shirt became an emblematic figure for a whole generation.

American Graffiti 1973
The film is set in 1962 in California and the various story lines revolve around teenage love, music, gangs, car races, friendship and becoming an adult.

Hair has become emblematic of the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s. The show opened on Broadway in 1968 and the film was released in 1979.
It tells the story of a group of hippies and pacifist bohemians living in New York and protesting against conventions and propriety, their parents’conservatism and conscription to the Vietnam War.

TRACE ECRITE 1

OBJ :
-  savoir parler de la mode des années 1950 à 1970
-  réutiliser le vocabulaire des vêtements
-  comparer les époques

Fashion in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

In the 60s, the clothes were brighter and more colourful than in the 50s. The skirts and dresses were much shorter and it was very shocking at the time. In the early 70s the clothes were more comfortable, longer and wider than in the 60s. Young men had long hair, it was fashionable but adults disapproved.

TRACE ECRITE 2

Obj : savoir expliquer ce que Jerry ne veut pas et pourquoi

Jerry doesn’t want to buy a suit but he can’t buy jeans !

Jeans are too casual because he is going to his sister’s wedding.

He needs to buy a suit.

He doesn’t like the suits of the suit section.

He doesn’t like the color (black).

He says he will look like a penguin.

And it is striped and he doesn’t like stripes.

He says it’s old-fashioned and ridiculous. It’s for old men.

The second suit is navy blue and it looks terrible on him.

The third suit is much too expensive : it is 200 dollars : 200 bucks and he can only spend 140.
